When to Consider a SaaS-Based Payment Solution: A Look at Dwolla’s White Label ACH API

On June 4, 2015, Dwolla dropped our transaction-based pricing model. Then, in August of that same year, we released the first phase of our White Label product—essentially harnessing the power of Dwolla’s payment infrastructure for payouts in four endpoints, and allowing partners to implement it under their own brand.

quarter-imgDropping our fee of 25¢ per transaction for transfers over $10 allowed us to focus not on volume, but rather solely on building out our payments software and move to a SaaS-based pricing model. Removing the irritation of per-transaction pricing granted us a new-found freedom. We could freely dive into building out the platform in a way that partners could easily build on top of—providing a seamless customer onboarding and payment experience.

From the beginning, we’ve provided webhooks that allow you to receive and provide real-time updates on customer account and transaction status changes and ACH transfer (to, from, and between members), as well as the ability to leverage “stored value” in a digital wallet-like capacity. Over the past year, we’ve released a plethora of features that can be accessed inside of the White Label API, such as instant account verification, micro-deposit bank verification, on-demand transfers, document upload, and dwolla.js (bank verification in just a few lines of code).

Personally, I’ve been with Dwolla for over 5 years. Our team, our company, and our product have changed drastically since the first day I wandered in, but the mission has stayed the same—to build a better way for our customers to move money. I couldn’t be more proud of the solution and our partners than I am today.

Since this pricing change, we’ve continued to refine our White Label offering as we learn from the feedback that our awesome partners provide.

Just last week, we released our first iteration of the Dwolla Dashboard and Admin
—an intuitive interface that brings the powerful data generated by the API front and center, allowing partners (regardless of technical efficiency) to easily keep a pulse on the health of the business. Within the Dashboard, partners will discover beautiful charts and graphs highlighting key business trends and metrics, view transaction details, and manage customer information.

Providing the software to access the ACH network within a branded platform or application is one thing, however we realized a crucial opportunity to set ourselves apart from our competitors in both the financial and tech industry—provide white glove integration support.

From the sales representative who develops your one-of-a-kind proposal, the integration lead guiding you through development within our sandbox and production environments, to the account services lead who advises you throughout the entire implementation process and beyond, we’re here to provide you with a top-notch experience. We believe that anyone paying for access to our White Label platform should also have direct access to dedicated support within the company.

Which brings us to the question: how much does our White Label ACH API cost? Each White Label integration is different, designed to fit the unique needs of a partner. From requiring various levels of account verification services to paying out thousands of customers at one time, there is no one-size-fits-all integration. That’s why we work with you to determine the best package and pricing for your needs.

Doing away with a per-transaction pricing model helped us pave the way for delivering more control over the feature set provided. It’s also been great for the business—in the past year, we’ve been able to grow our revenue stream 30% month-over-month. It allowed our team to get laser-focused on building, marketing, and selling a modern access point to the ACH network.

Let the experts at Dwolla help you streamline payments within your organization and for your customers. Whether you’re an established software provider, an innovative new marketplace, or a small team building the first iteration of your new savings app, we’re here to help you tap into the payment platform we’ve already built.

WeFinance Uses Dwolla to Power Affordable Loan Crowdfunding

Sometimes life throws a little more at you than you can financially handle. Perhaps it’s a shift in career or an unexpected family transition that carries a large financial burden. Such situations may require you to apply for a personal loan from your financial institution or other loan provider. Unlike home mortgages, which the bank can lend while using the house as collateral if you were unable to make your payments, personal loans usually don’t require an individual to offer equal collateral. Because of this, personal loans are riskier for banks to issue, and they make up for this by charging high interest rates.

According to Nerdwallet, individuals with good credit may be able to secure a personal loan with a 10% interest rate, but those with fair to poor credit can expect rates to float between 11-36% APR. If you pay back a $10,000 loan with a 36% interest rate over the course of three years, you’ll be paying the bank an additional $6,489.44 on top of the $10,000 that you initially borrowed.

wefinance_logo_hi_res (1)

Leveraging an online crowdfunding model, WeFinance is offering a better way for individuals to secure personal loans, as well as offering contributors a way to make a profit on their contributions.

Think of it as loan borrowing without the hassle of applying through a bank, giving borrowers more control over establishing the loan and repayment terms, as well as what percentage rate they are willing to pay. The current rates on loans extended through the platform usually fall between four to ten percent.

Screen Shot 2016-05-04 at 9.24.44 AM

WeFinance encourages borrowers to request loans directly from their own community, using participants’ real identities right from within their personal and extended networks. The benefit of earning interest as a lender is in turn enjoyed by real people that the borrower knows personally, instead of a bank.

WeFinance facilitates the monthly repayments to lenders, with transactions being transferred from the borrower’s bank account to their lenders. In order to build out this desired functionality, WeFinance turned to Dwolla and our White Label API for bank transfers to implement this payment process in a way that fit seamlessly into their user experience.

‘WeFinance (wefinance.co) is a loan crowdfunding platform. We help borrowers save money on existing or new loans by borrowing micro-loans directly from their own community and others who believe in them. Thus, our payment solution needed to be easy to setup and intuitive for our end users, but powerful enough for us to manage suites of loans on our users’ behalf over months and years without requiring them to take action. And, because we’re in the business of saving people money, we can’t accept the exorbitant fees so many platforms charge.

Dwolla white label is the perfect solution for us. There’s no need for users to deal with any external payment accounts, and most of them use Instant Verification to link their bank account in seconds. Then, we can easily manage loan payments for them with Dwolla’s API, and transmit repayments back over time to each individual lender, whether it’s a $25 loan or $2500, without all the savings getting sucked up in transaction fees.’

Real Estate Marketplace Integrates White Label Bank Transfers

When you think of crowdfunding, chances are you think of sites like Kickstarter or GoFundMe—used for everything from launching entrepreneurial ideas to helping finance a much-needed vacation.

However, to Charles Clinton, he saw crowdfunding (and the development of the JOBS Act) as a chance to open up the private real estate investing market to the public. As a real estate lawyer who worked primarily for large private equity clients, he saw how large the opportunity was first hand and was determined to build the technology and the marketplace to facilitate such investments. After teaming up with Mission Capital, a real estate financial advisory firm, and rounding out his talented executive team, Clinton launched EQUITYMULTIPLE.

em_logotype (1)

Unlike investing in someone’s new craft brewing equipment, EQUITYMULTIPLE brings a completely different paradigm to crowdfunding. EQUITYMULTIPLE connects commercial real estate developers with individual accredited investors.

Commercial real estate (CRE) has been a notoriously difficult industry for individual accredited investors to break into. EQUITYMULTIPLE is democratizing the real estate investment space by functioning as a financing marketplace—connecting smart development projects with individual accredited investors across the country.

For investors, EQUITYMULTIPLE is the doorway into an industry traditionally characterized by strong, reliable returns, and insulated from the volatility of the stock market. The platform makes it simple to build a diversified portfolio of thoroughly vetted projects, many of which would have been unavailable to individual investors had they not belonged to a large real estate group.

In turn, those raising capital for projects get access to a much deeper and more diverse pool of investors, thanks in part to Mission Capital’s extensive network of investors. EQUITYMULTIPLE provides a streamlined, singular point of contact to manage investor interactions and updates, as well as various funding options—online fundraising, and traditional debt and equity financing.

Screen Shot 2016-04-04 at 4.46.47 PM

The team at EQUITYMULTIPLE undertook the heavy task of building one of the first CRE investing marketplaces of its kindand succeeded.

When they needed a way to seamlessly and programmatically payout returns to investors through the platform, they went in search of a bank transfer API that they could bake into their user experience.

Peter Shankar, EQUITYMULTIPLE CTO, saw Dwolla’s API for White Label bank transfers as the solution.

We chose Dwolla because of their strength in compliance, capabilities in the white label payments space, and attention to detail in the scoping process. From implementation to deployment and ongoing support they’ve been one of the best vendors to work with, and they really align to our processes, and make themselves highly available. The tech stack is evolving, and we’re able to work hand in hand with great engineers to get the most out of our integration. Best of all, we see our customers more engaged with our product. As a solution, Dwolla has been ideal for us in implementing a closed loop investment process.”

Peter Shankar, EQUITYMULTIPLE CTO

Dwolla’s White Label API plugged right into the EQUITYMULTIPLE platform to power bank transfers for the marketplace without disrupting the investment process, while meeting the service and compliance standards required of a payments partner.

Introducing New Webinar: Upgrading to White Label

Over the last few months, Dwolla has been unveiling its improved version of our API, called V2. The new version offers businesses new features and capabilities that make bank transfer integrations easier, cleaner, and more flexible. Most notably, it allows paying partners to create native, custom, and integrated payment experiences for their users that look and feel like their brand—not ours. We call it Dwolla White Label.

The beloved old version of the API still offers free basic services and simple Dwolla-branded experiences, but existing customers of V1 have been knocking down the door to upgrade to Dwolla White Label. To make that process as easy as possible, we made the migration tool to help upgrade to Dwolla White Label.

Programmatically transition customers to a white label application

Our white label services have been an ever increasing focus for us as businesses continue to find more and more ways to innovate with it.

As more white label partners come online we’ve heard two things loud and clear:migration-tool-icon-for-blog

  1. Businesses that built their customer base/partner base using Dwolla’s branded solutions and upgraded to white label want to make the transition easy.
  2. Businesses building white label services who want to make it incredibly easy for existing Dwolla users to create accounts on their white label application.

The migration tool solves for this problem in an incredibly straightforward way. As a white label partner, you request access from the Dwolla account holder and an OAuth token is generated. You then create a customer in your white label application with that token. Here is an example:

POST /customers HTTP/1.1
Host: api-uat.dwolla.com
Accept: application/vnd.dwolla.v1.hal+json
Content-Type: application/vnd.dwolla.v1.hal+json
Authorization: Bearer pBA9fVDBEyYZCEsLf/wKehyh1RTpzjUj5KzIRfDi0wKTii7DqY

{
  "accessToken": "xOWs8wRvsDEylKglN8Mr6FuhABYpssvME5pL9FTFKeEBBEmhtP"
}

Easy as that. With the account holder’s permission they will be migrated to your white label application as a customer and with a few clicks, they’ll be enjoying the experience you create.

The migration tool is a free addition to any new white label package. If you’d like documentation or would like to get started with the migration, send us a contact below:

Get to market faster with Dwolla’s bank transfer API

Invest in an integrated payment solution for your platform that allows you to maintain control of the customer experience, while reducing your compliance and processing headaches.

Screen Shot 2015-12-21 at 1.06.22 PM

Retail marketplace Jane and mobile fintech app Sweep.co were faced with a number options when selecting a solution that addressed their unique ACH processing needs. Ultimately each elected to go with Dwolla’s feature rich, easy to integrate API for one overriding reason: time to market. In addition, each placed a premium on controlling the payments experience through Dwolla’s white label service and valued Dwolla’s guidance in managing the compliance requirements. Both Jane and Sweep are able to achieve funds transfers via a trusted partner, allowing them to focus on their core business.

The same rationale applies to anyone who is looking to transfer funds electronically.  Whether you’re looking for a straightforward disbursements solution or a more holistic, end-to-end payments experience—including instant bank verification and managing compliance requirements—Dwolla’s robust payments platform allows you to facilitate payments from, to, or between your customers.

Phase 1 – Funds transfer wrapped inside of 4 endpoints

We took a phased approach to the latest version of our API. The first phase allowed platforms to process bank sourced transfers in a white label capacity, and in many cases, not requiring re-collection of the customer data already on file. It’s a perfect solution for payouts, an integration consisting of only 4 endpoints.

“We’ve seen exponential growth, and Dwolla has handled disbursements for our platform every step of the way.”

Mike McEwan, CEO of Jane

Phase 2 – Customer verification

At the completion of phase 1, moving money was limited to the receipt of funds by a customer—a perfect use case for disbursements. The second phase extended the current, phase 1 customer onboarding flow. Now, with the same #customers endpoint, we were able to provide our partner with an automated identity verification solution, accounting for the CIP data elements required for both customers sending funds and allowing a customer to hold funds.

“Dwolla was able to offer the exact service our customers wanted whereas traditional financial institutions either didn’t understand how to do this or couldn’t move fast enough.”

Jackson Gates, CEO of Sweep

Phase 3 – Bank verification

The third phase focused on bank account verification. We released Dwolla.js—a powerfully simple integration that partners can leverage to embed an instant account verification process within their platform, or securely collect account and routing numbers. With Dwolla.js, sensitive customer financial data never touches a partner’s servers. All this, in a few lines of code.

We are never done. While we continue to migrate additional functionality over to the white label experience, such as an improved mass payment flow, we ask that you provide feedback and suggestions on the v2 Dwolla API.

Integrating with Dwolla’s powerful white label ACH payouts solution

White Label Payments with Dwolla

Last week we released our white label solution for businesses and nonprofits looking to streamline their ACH payouts. Within your own application or online portal, Dwolla white label puts a powerful ACH payments platform behind your brand and logo.

The white label solution allows you to transfer funds seamlessly, from customer on-boarding to how your businesses name is displayed on your customer’s bank statement.

While managing the role as payment originator, Dwolla provides a simple, easy-to-implement API to power your payments and help you manage risk, fraud, and compliance.

When implementing Dwolla’s white label payout solution, there are three major components that require different levels of verification to get going:

  1. The creation of a customer record
  2. The association of a funding source with that customer record
  3. The transfer of funds between linked accounts

To test the API requests, you’ll want to first create a sandbox account.

Creating a Customer Record

Once you’ve set up a testing account, you’ll begin by creating a customer record, which requires at least a full name and email address for each user you’d like to transfer funds to. Once the customer record is created, you will find the customer object URL in the location header.

Pro tip: To enhance Dwolla’s ability to monitor fraud, we strongly recommend providing the IP address of the end-user accessing your app as the ipAddress parameter.

Here’s what the request and response should look like:

Request:
Response:

Connect a funding source

Once you’ve successfully created a customer record, the next step is to associate a funding source. This step calls for three additional pieces of information, so funds can automatically be sent to this customer record:

  • Bank account
  • Routing number
  • Account type (ie. government, nonprofit, business)

All information provided in this step is securely stored with Dwolla.

Request:
Response:

Subscribe to Webhooks

In order to transfer funds between your account and the customer record, you’ll first set up webhooks to notify your customer when an event occurs. To create these webhooks, start by creating a client access token and use the credentials provided.

Once you’ve generated this token, continue on to creating the webhook subscription. Start by calling the webhook-subscriptions endpoint with your callback URL.

Request:
Response:

Now that you’ve made your subscription, Dwolla will send webhook notifications to the provided URL. Responses take about 20 seconds to deliver after the event has occurred, but if you miss one, no worries—8 delivery attempts are executed over the course of 72 hours. An example webhook is shown below.

Transfer funds from account to account

The final step in this process is creating a transfer from your account to a customer. To do so, you’ll need the information for the bank account that sources the funds and the customer to which the funds will go.

The transfer of funds is a three-step process. In short you will follow these steps:

  1. Fetch a list of available funding sources using the List Funding Sources (Account) endpoint.
  2. Create a transfer by specifying the account’s funding source as the source and the customer as the destination.
  3. Check the transfer status by referring to its ID.

Once this action is complete, a receipt of a webhook will indicate a change. This can be used as a trigger to communicate with the customer, sending an email with an update on the status of funds.

Above we’ve provided a quick breakdown of what the integration process looks like with our white labeled bank transfers solution. To get the full guide, visit our developer portal.

Coming Soon: Dwolla White Label Solution

Dwolla White Label your brand here

First phase: create customer records and branded payouts

As August quickly approaches, so does the release of the first phase of Dwolla’s new white label solution. White label functionality with corresponding developer documentation will be made available to businesses who’ve entered into a contract with Dwolla and pay a flat monthly fee, with no additional per transaction fee.

So, what will be available in August’s release of Dwolla’s white label solution?

Phase one of Dwolla’s white label will allow for partners to seamlessly pay their customers through our API. Dwolla will maintain origination responsibilities, while the partner controls the end user experience. Specifically, this means that a partner will be able to create a customer record one time by passing first and last name, email address, account and routing number via the API, then initiate payments to that customer on an ongoing basis.

From beginning to end, the customer will be exposed only to the business’s brand. For example, the partner’s business name will display on customer’s bank statement next to the deposit, with no reference to Dwolla.

Partners will receive updates to account and payment status through our new version of event-based webhooks. This allows a partner to control and brand all required email communications.

While this satisfies the needs of businesses doing such things as paying out contractors, we understand the need for a full-stack white label solution. Phase two of white label Dwolla will include the ability for a partner to integrate a streamlined pay-in experience, supported by Dwolla’s instant account verification.

Let Dwolla do the heavy lifting around things like compliance and account verification, while you build a payments experience into your application or platform that maintains your brand throughout the entire experience.

White Label Payments

Imagine payments from your site that work perfectly, handled by a third-party but with your branding, allowing you to do what you do best and focus on your customers. The Dwolla white label solution gives you the ability to seamlessly provide an ACH payment experience for your platform or application in a way that looks and feels like your brand.

You get to focus on your area of expertise and delight your customers, while we do the heavy lifting around compliance and fraud considerations. Instead of building your own payment infrastructure and anti-fraud tools, you should leverage Dwolla’s payment platform and focus on your core product, staying in control of all your creative branding details, and offering your customers a seamless, integrated payment experience.

Alternatively, Dwolla OAuth empowers you to create a focused onboarding and checkout experience with minimal Dwolla branding. With OAuth account creation, you choose the level of Dwolla account information to request from your customers at the point of payment—all while keeping them on your site.

Pay directly to bank accounts with Dwolla’s white label

Dwolla white label for business

With our latest pricing launch, we also announced the coming of a new Dwolla improvement—white label.

Our white label solution allows you to do a very simple thing: make payments.

Businesses, merchants, financial institutions, and government agencies at all levels have come to know Dwolla as a feature-rich payment platform that emphasizes security, efficiency and simplicity. This ranges from a proprietary real-time transfer protocol to the ability to disburse thousands of payments with a single request, and as of last Thursday, the unprecedented removal of a per-transaction fee.

However, Dwolla also required those businesses and agencies’ customers to create an account with Dwolla in order to use the platform. Where this works for many, we’ve also heard a reluctance of many when asked to introduce another brand to their payment experience.

It’s your customers who cost you real dollars to both acquire and establish trust in your brand. They are willing to give you their money, and we appreciate that came with a lot of work. In response to this feedback we’re introducing a payment experience that allows you to retain control of the end-user experience you have carefully considered, measured, and improved upon over time.

With Dwolla’s white label service, you can integrate our suite payment tools into your service while maintaining the ability to customize the end user experience. A big advantage as well: when using Dwolla’s white label service there’s still no 25 cent per transaction fee.

Here’s a taste of what’s included with white label:

  • Branding control. You’ll be able to transfer funds to your customer’s bank account using the Dwolla platform, without sacrificing your end user experience. You’ll manage communication with your users and appear on your customers’ bank statements.
  • Integration support. We’ll work hand in hand with your team to get things up and running smoothly.
  • Dedicated customer support for your business. White Label comes with white glove support.

If you’re interested in white label for your business we want to hear from you. Hit the button below and send us a note, or if you prefer phone give us a ring at 888-289-8744, Ext 4004.
