When to Consider a SaaS-Based Payment Solution: A Look at Dwolla’s White Label ACH API

On June 4, 2015, Dwolla dropped our transaction-based pricing model. Then, in August of that same year, we released the first phase of our White Label product—essentially harnessing the power of Dwolla’s payment infrastructure for payouts in four endpoints, and allowing partners to implement it under their own brand.

quarter-imgDropping our fee of 25¢ per transaction for transfers over $10 allowed us to focus not on volume, but rather solely on building out our payments software and move to a SaaS-based pricing model. Removing the irritation of per-transaction pricing granted us a new-found freedom. We could freely dive into building out the platform in a way that partners could easily build on top of—providing a seamless customer onboarding and payment experience.

From the beginning, we’ve provided webhooks that allow you to receive and provide real-time updates on customer account and transaction status changes and ACH transfer (to, from, and between members), as well as the ability to leverage “stored value” in a digital wallet-like capacity. Over the past year, we’ve released a plethora of features that can be accessed inside of the White Label API, such as instant account verification, micro-deposit bank verification, on-demand transfers, document upload, and dwolla.js (bank verification in just a few lines of code).

Personally, I’ve been with Dwolla for over 5 years. Our team, our company, and our product have changed drastically since the first day I wandered in, but the mission has stayed the same—to build a better way for our customers to move money. WeFinance Uses Dwolla to Power Affordable Loan Crowdfunding

Sometimes life throws a little more at you than you can financially handle. Perhaps it’s a shift in career or an unexpected family transition that carries a large financial burden. Such situations may require you to apply for a personal loan from your financial institution or other loan provider. Unlike home mortgages, which the bank can lend while using the house as collateral if you were unable to make your payments, personal loans usually don’t require an individual to offer equal collateral. Because of this, personal loans are riskier for banks to issue, and they make up for this by charging high interest rates.

According to Nerdwallet, individuals with good credit may be able to secure a personal loan with a 10% interest rate, but those with fair to poor credit can expect rates to float between 11-36% APR. If you pay back a $10,000 loan with a 36% interest rate over the course of three years, you’ll be paying the bank an additional $6,489.44 on top of the $10,000 that you initially borrowed.

Leveraging an online crowdfunding model, WeFinance is offering a better way for individuals to secure personal loans, as well as offering contributors a way to make a profit on their contributions.


Think of it as loan borrowing without the hassle of applying through a bank, giving borrowers more control over establishing the loan and repayment terms, as well as what percentage rate they are willing to pay. When you think of crowdfunding, chances are you think of sites like Kickstarter or GoFundMe—used for everything from launching entrepreneurial ideas to helping finance a much-needed vacation.

Programmatically transition customers to a white label application

Our white label services have been an ever increasing focus for us as businesses continue to find more and more ways to innovate with it.

  1. Businesses that built their customer base/partner base using Dwolla’s branded solutions and upgraded to white label want to make the transition easy.

The migration tool solves for this problem in an incredibly straightforward way. As a white label partner, you request access from the Dwolla account holder and an OAuth token is generated. You then create a customer in your white label application with that token. Here is an example:

Phase 1 – Funds transfer wrapped inside of 4 endpoints

We took a phased approach to the latest version of our API. The first phase allowed platforms to process bank sourced transfers in a white label capacity, and in many cases, not requiring re-collection of the customer data already on file. It’s a perfect solution for payouts, an integration consisting of only 4 endpoints.

Phase 2 – Customer verification

At the completion of phase 1, moving money was limited to the receipt of funds by a customer—a perfect use case for disbursements. The second phase extended the current, phase 1 customer onboarding flow. Now, with the same #customers endpoint, we were able to provide our partner with an automated identity verification solution, accounting for the CIP data elements required for both customers sending funds and allowing a customer to hold funds.

Phase 3 – Bank verification

The third phase focused on bank account verification. We released Dwolla.js—a powerfully simple integration that partners can leverage to embed an instant account verification process within their platform, or securely collect account and routing numbers. With Dwolla.js, sensitive customer financial data never touches a partner’s servers. All this, in a few lines of code.

We are never done. While we continue to migrate additional functionality over to the white label experience, such as an improved mass payment flow, we ask that you provide feedback and suggestions on the v2 Dwolla API.

Integrating with Dwolla’s powerful white label ACH payouts solution

White Label Payments with Dwolla

Last week we released our white label solution for businesses and nonprofits looking to streamline their ACH payouts. Within your own application or online portal, Dwolla white label puts a powerful ACH payments platform behind your brand and logo.

The white label solution allows you to transfer funds seamlessly, from customer on-boarding to how your businesses name is displayed on your customer’s bank statement.

While managing the role as payment originator, Dwolla provides a simple, easy-to-implement API to power your payments and help you manage risk, fraud, and compliance.

When implementing Dwolla’s white label payout solution, there are three major components that require different levels of verification to get going:

  1. The creation of a customer record
  2. The association of a funding source with that customer record
  3. The transfer of funds between linked accounts

To test the API requests, you’ll want to first create a sandbox account.

Creating a Customer Record

Once you’ve set up a testing account, you’ll begin by creating a customer record, which requires at least a full name and email address for each user you’d like to transfer funds to. Once the customer record is created, you will find the customer object URL in the location header.

Pro tip: To enhance Dwolla’s ability to monitor fraud, we strongly recommend providing the IP address of the end-user accessing your app as the ipAddress parameter.

Here’s what the request and response should look like:


Connect a funding source

Once you’ve successfully created a customer record, the next step is to associate a funding source. This step calls for three additional pieces of information, so funds can automatically be sent to this customer record:

  • Bank account
  • Routing number
  • Account type (ie. government, nonprofit, business)

All information provided in this step is securely stored with Dwolla.


Subscribe to Webhooks

In order to transfer funds between your account and the customer record, you’ll first set up webhooks to notify your customer when an event occurs. To create these webhooks, start by creating a client access token and use the credentials provided.

Once you’ve generated this token, continue on to creating the webhook subscription. Start by calling the webhook-subscriptions endpoint with your callback URL.


Now that you’ve made your subscription, Dwolla will send webhook notifications to the provided URL. Responses take about 20 seconds to deliver after the event has occurred, but if you miss one, no worries—8 delivery attempts are executed over the course of 72 hours. An example webhook is shown below.

Transfer funds from account to account

The final step in this process is creating a transfer from your account to a customer. To do so, you’ll need the information for the bank account that sources the funds and the customer to which the funds will go.

The transfer of funds is a three-step process. In short you will follow these steps:

  1. Fetch a list of available funding sources using the List Funding Sources (Account) endpoint.
  2. Create a transfer by specifying the account’s funding source as the source and the customer as the destination.
  3. Check the transfer status by referring to its ID.

Once this action is complete, a receipt of a webhook will indicate a change. This can be used as a trigger to communicate with the customer, sending an email with an update on the status of funds.

First phase: create customer records and branded payouts

As August quickly approaches, so does the release of the first phase of Dwolla’s new white label solution. White label functionality with corresponding developer documentation will be made available to businesses who’ve entered into a contract with Dwolla and pay a flat monthly fee, with no additional per transaction fee.

So, what will be available in August’s release of Dwolla’s white label solution?

Phase one of Dwolla’s white label will allow for partners to seamlessly pay their customers through our API. Dwolla will maintain origination responsibilities, while the partner controls the end user experience. Specifically, this means that a partner will be able to create a customer record one time by passing first and last name, email address, account and routing number via the API, then initiate payments to that customer on an ongoing basis.

From beginning to end, the customer will be exposed only to the business’s brand. For example, the partner’s business name will display on customer’s bank statement next to the deposit, with no reference to Dwolla.

Partners will receive updates to account and payment status through our new version of event-based webhooks. This allows a partner to control and brand all required email communications.

While this satisfies the needs of businesses doing such things as paying out contractors, we understand the need for a full-stack white label solution. Phase two of white label Dwolla will include the ability for a partner to integrate a streamlined pay-in experience, supported by Dwolla’s instant account verification.

Our white label solution allows you to do a very simple thing: make payments.
