#IM48: “A Roadtrip for People with Ideas”

Posted in Blog, community, entreprenuerialism, events, ideamensch, im48, Misc, tour on July 23rd, 2012

They say that no region has a monopoly on great ideas, and that everyone has a story to tell.

While we know that as true, partly because of these guys, the bright lights and successes of the Valley and Alley often make it difficult for others to believe that our ideas are just as bright, just as powerful. Worse yet, it leads us to question whether our ideas are just as bright, just as powerful.

This summer, there are 4 guys who have packed themselves into a tight SUV, tighter schedule and even tighterest budget (go with it), in order to find and prove that great ideas exist all over the country. (Skip to the bottom for awesome video)

On August 6th, #IM48 is coming to Des Moines.

I should probably back up at this point, and introduce Mario  Schulzke and the project. Together with the help of a handful of global contributors, like Seth Godin, Tony Hsieh and Gary Vaynerchuk, Mario has collected hundreds of interviews on his blog, IdeaMensch. In the process, he’s created a community of  “idea people.” Now they’re taking the mission on the road with #IM48, a summer long coast-to-coast roadtrip/documentary project.

48 states, 114 days, 50+ couches (give or take a few floors),  and over 15,000 miles, Mario and his team are organizing 50 events to showcase the big ideas and the people that are bringing to life. They’re hoping to “ignite entrepreneurial communities all across America” and “put into place a framework and the people so these communities will continue to exist and flourish.” Think a little bit TEDx with a whole lot of Ignite. Check out our good friend, Philip Rosedale as he elaborates on the origins of Second Life or bestselling author, Sarah Lacy, and the motivations for creating the popular tech blog, PandoDaily.

What’s best is that nothing about this is prescribed; they’re totally learning and orchestrating this as they go, relying on the community to embrace themselves. Everything is organic.

That’s where I hope our Des Moines can step up. They’re  looking for our community’s ideas, leaders, and supporters to help push our city forward.

  • attendees: Come it’s $10. Here’s how they use the money. http://tmblr.co/ZVHo2yPTewQI
  • sponsors: Because ideas are free, but gas isn’t. They have several options.
  • volunteer: Check out their green form (toward the bottom)
  • venue: Preferably free, holds 50-100 people and is awesome. Ideas?
  • 3-4 local speakers that have had big ideas and brought them to life. Reach out to mario@ideamensch.com.

Mario and team are giving us a microphone, but he can’t speak for us. Hope you can make it.
